What are patient-specific cranial implants?

Cranial reconstruction, also known as cranioplasty, is a surgical procedure used to reconstruct an injured portion of the skull caused by an accident, tumour, or congenital defect. The procedure restores the contour of the skull, protects intracranial structures, and normalises cerebral hemodynamics. One of the most important aspects of cranial reconstruction is that the cranial implants fit the exact specifications of an individual’s skull in order to achieve long-term success and comfort.

Cranioplasty had been used by neurosurgeons for more than 100 years, however, the newer technologies, focusing on patient-specific implants, are proving safer and less invasive procedures.

The materials used in cranioplasty have been at the cutting edge of biomolecular and material science. Autologous bones such as the calvarium, rib, and tibia were commonly used in cranioplasty. But autologous or allograft bone has a high rate of resorption, which results in structural breakdown and reoperation. Thus, alternatives such as plastic, metal, and high polymer materials have entered the historical stage. On the basis of the materials utilized in creating the customized cranial implants, we have three series. These are

  1. ULTIFIT 3D PRO

ULTIFIT 3D PRO is the Advanced Customized Cranial Implants presented by 3D Incredible that uses titanium alloy for creating the patient-specific cranial implants. Titanium and titanium alloys have high specific strength, making them ideal for biomedical applications. In addition, it has low electrical conductivity, which contributes to the electrochemical oxidation of titanium, resulting in the formation of a thin passive oxide layer. The oxide layer results in higher corrosion resistance. Because titanium has an oxide isoelectric point of 5-6, this protective passive layer is retained at pH values in the human body. Titanium and its oxides have a low ion formation tendency and reactivity with macromolecules in aqueous environments.

Using the conventional methods, implants made of titanium and its alloy tended to be quite expensive. However, additive manufacturing used by Incredible has made the creation of titanium Ti6AI4V ELI alloy implants inexpensive. The material has a higher resistance to corrosion and is regarded as one of the most biocompatible materials.

  1. ULTIFIT 3D ECO

ULTIFIT 3D ECO is the PMMA Customized Cranial Implant presented by 3D Incredible. In this series, we create patient-specific cranial implants using PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate). Today, PMMA, an alloplastic material, is another most widely used material during cranial reconstruction procedures.

Using additive manufacturing techniques, 3D Incredible creates biocompatible and non-degradable acrylic resin-based implants, which can be fabricated prior to surgery. PMMA customized cranial implant has several benefits, such as it reduces surgical time, uses simple techniques, and gives long-term aesthetic results.

  1. ULTIFIT 3D SUPREME

The third in the series is ULTIFIT 3D SUPREME. The Incredible team is working yet on another customized cranial implant, which is being made using the high-performing thermoplastic Polyetheretherketone (PEEK). PEEK, a semi-crystalline thermoplastic, is highly stable and has unique properties such as high-temperature performance, chemical hydrolysis, wear resistance, electrical performance, and mechanical properties. Low levels of ionic extractable, low outgassing, and extremely low smoke and toxic gas emissions result from the composition and inherent purity.

Because of such incredible properties of PEEK, the R&D team of 3D Incredible is working on the material for making PEEK customized cranial implants. Since the product has not yet been launched, we will talk about it later.
