Background

A young unmarried girl of 18 years came with a tumor over her right cheek bone grossly distorting her face. She had earlier undergone two surgeries for the same. This time, the tumor was destroying the entire right side of the upper jaw bone and projecting inside the nose of the patient.

Dr. Siddharth Shah & team, a leading Head and Neck Cancer Surgeon, went through clinical observation and decided that a patient-specific implant could help in achieving a symmetrical face.

Solution

The case of the young girl was carried out by Dr. Siddharth Shah, Dr. Shruti Soni, and Dr. Pratik Shah. After studying the patient’s CT scan images, it was determined that the patient required the removal of the entire maxilla, including the alveolar process, orbital floor with hemi-palate, and zygomatic process. The main concern was reconstruction and rehabilitation to maintain facial contour and provide a set of teeth that would be aesthetically and functionally useful. The use of a free fibular flap with a dental implant was found to be an expensive option. Therefore, it was decided to go for a patient-specific maxillary implant that involved the lower orbit, zygoma, and maxillary ridge.

The Incredible team discussed the design and entire manufacturing process with Dr. Siddharth Shah. The design was completed with valuable inputs from both the doctor and the Incredible design team. The screw placements were designed in the anterior region extending towards the right canine, nasal bone, and on the zygoma. The benefit of using a customized implant is that, being patient-specific, it provides an excellent fit while maintaining the aesthetics of the patient and providing symmetry to the face. The implant was designed in such a way that abutments could later be used to make a denture.

Surgical planning was provided by 3D Incredible, which helped in deciding the surgery step by step. Incredible AM Pvt Ltd has undergone rigorous testing and validation of its plant, equipment, and processes to ensure safety and quality.
